Members seek answers | Nadroga branch questions SODELPA’s October 24 meeting

SODELPA Nadroga branch senior members have expressed concern over the party’s special general meeting held on October 24.

The SGM held in Suva resulted in a strong call from the party’s management board to its government MPs to vote against the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill 32.

Party vice-president and Burebasaga representative Ratu Vereniki Nailo said an explanation from a senior party member was insufficient.

“How the SGM was called when we were not informed is something that we need to look at,” he said.

“As Mr (Viliame) Gavoka had said, this meeting was called by a Working Committee through the president.

“I spoke to the party president, and he confirmed he called the meeting.”

He said the meeting should have been called according to the party’s constitution.

Mr Gavoka had earlier confirmed the SODELPA constitution stated that SGM’s could only be called by the management board and by the general secretary.

Questions sent to party leader Aseri Radrodro and general secretary Levi Vere on October 28 and yesterday have remained unanswered.

Meanwhile, this week Mr Radrodro reiterated their stand on the draft legislation while reiterating the party’s commitment to fulfilling their role in Parliament.

“SODELPA has been clear and consistent about its reasons for not supporting Bill 32 in its current form,” he said in a statement.

“These concerns have already been formally communicated to the Honourable Prime Minister in a letter submitted last week outlining the party’s position and the matters we believe require further consideration.

“Our position should therefore be understood within the content of our responsibility to the people we represent rather than as a challenge to the stability or leadership of the Coalition Government.”
