THE media plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions and shifting the narrative about women in all spaces.

Speaking at a breakfast hosted by The Fiji Times Ltd Pte to commemorate International Women’s Day, Minister for Women and Children, Sashi Kiran emphasised the growing importance of media in amplifying the voices of women and driving progress toward gender equality.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Accelerate action” she urged Fijians to pause and acknowledge the struggles and achievements of their foremothers, including those from Fiji’s indigenous, Melanesian, and Chinese communities.

“We have made a lot of progress, but there is still a long way to go in many areas,” Ms Kiran said.

Ms Kiran said the grumbles and discussions in communities are often shaped by what is put out in the media.

She said the way the media narrated stories “is the way they are shaping the narrative of the nation”.
