On this special day in the Christian calendar, we reflect on the important message of hope and renewal, and the family.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us many things about the birth, and the journey of Christianity.

The message of hope and renewal stands out. There are challenges and we reflect on the positive message of giving.

Christians will rejoice over the story of the little baby who was born in a manger in Bethlehem.

It’s a story that stands out with deep meaning, and important lessons for mankind.

It is a story that has been retold many times, in many languages, and dialects around the world. It is a special story, and very tightly linked to this period.

We live in a country where religion holds an important place in many people’s lives and we have learnt to appreciate and accept there are different religions, customs and traditions.

Like every other important religious date, Christmas day is special for every Fijian.

As Christians acknowledge the birth of Jesus Christ, others will find time to relax and unwind after a hectic year.

Over this period, Christians appreciate the virgin Mary, Joseph and how Christ was born.

They will embrace the message of hope on Christmas day.

Our problems appear to fade away at the end of a year, at least in importance, even if it is only to resurface after the new year.

Christmas is a very special day for believers who will partake in sharing with loved ones.

We acknowledge the spirit of goodwill.

Some may have a low-key celebration, and many will make an effort to go to church or to mass today.

As we go about with our plans, let us spare a thought for people who are not as fortunate, and are unable to celebrate today for various reasons.

We hope you will find some comfort and reassurance. We hope for good tidings for you and your family.

We remember those who will need to be at work to ensure our country continues to move forward.

This Christmas Day, we hope you will spare a thought for the less fortunate.

We also reflect on international events like the wars in Ukraine and in Gaza. We mourn the loss of lives and pray for peace and understanding in the world.

In Fiji, Christmas is part of our lives. Even in our darkest days, hope can make a difference, and we wish for peace, unity and for compassion.

On behalf of The Fiji Times, I wish you all a safe and joyous Christmas filled with love and hope!
