Moana Pasifika head coach Aaron Mauger is impressed with how his team and their Pacific brother, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua fared in their first season in the Super Rugby Pacific competition.

The former All Black, who played 46 times for his country, said both teams exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“We are both extremely proud and happy for our first season,” said Mauger.

“We probably exceeded expectations in a lot of ways and we know there is a lot more in us. We will bring our experiences from year one and try to improve and be better in year two.”

Mauger said there was a possibility of more Fijian players joining the Moana Pasifika team alongside former Queen Victoria School student Timoci Tavatavanawai and Levi Aumua, who has maternal links to Fiji.

“There is always that possibility because obviously we have two Fijian boys in our squad who are also our best performers, Levi Aumua and Timoci Tavatavanawai. It is awesome having these boys around and they add a nice flavour to our group. The Fijian Drua has a lot of players available at their disposal. If they do not get selected and are available for us, we will bring them in if there is a need and it is a high possibility.”
