THE Roko Tui Lau has clarified that Matuku has always been part of the Bose Vanua ni Yasana o Lau, saying suggestions that the district had only rejoined the annual gathering after 30 years were based on a misunderstanding.

Roko Tui Lau Jioji Kalounivalu said what had occurred this year was not Matuku’s return to the bose ni yasana, but the district hosting the meeting for the first time in three decades.

“There seem to have been a misinterpretation, the tikina or District of Matuku has always been part of the Bose Vanua ni Yasana o Lau,” he said.

The last time the Bose Vanua ni Yasana o Lau was held in Matuku was in 1996.

“This year’s meeting was supposed to be held in Matuku, but because the preparations was late, it was agreed for it to be held in Suva, but the District of Matuku to host.”

Mr Kalounivalu said Matuku had remained an active participant in previous bose ni yasana meetings and had never withdrawn from the provincial council.

The Fiji Times had published two articles yesterday that inaccurately stated that Matuku had rejoined the province’s annual meeting after a lapse of 30 years.
