Behind every successful man is a strong woman.
Mary Mason is the epitome of that for her husband, Geoffrey, who was named the National Farmer of the Year by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Mrs Mason said her husband’s 50 years of dedication had been rewarding for their family.
“Every morning he would get up very early to tend to his farm,” she said.
“It was very hard in the beginning but he was dedicated and loved what he did.
“Our eldest child is now more than 50 years old and he was very young when my husband started his farm.
“So he’s been doing this for more than 50 years and I’m very proud of what he has achieved.”
Mr Mason said he was grateful for the recognition.
“It’s been a very long journey but one that has been very fruitful.
“I believe when you work hard, you will be rewarded for your work and commitment.”
The 80-year-old, alongside four other farmers, were commended during the National Farmers Awards in Nadi yesterday.
The awards ceremony was the culmination of a three-day agriculture show in the Western Division.
While closing the event, Minister for Agriculture Dr Mahendra Reddy said he was pleased with the outcome of the three-day event.
He said the agriculture sector was a deeply valued economic booster for the country which needed more support in the coming years.
