Waratahs winger Mark Nawaqanitawase is excited to be trying out rugby 7s code as he aims for a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Nawaqanitawase was also part of the Australia rugby 7s team who is currently in the country playing friendly matches against the Fijian 7s team at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

He admits Fiji was a tough opponent.

“It was tough for me personally.

“Fiji is a tough team, and our fans expect a lot. But these games teach us a lot, so it’s good to get a first sit down and learn a few lessons,” Nawaqanitawase said.

He says loves the intensity of 7s rugby.

“It’s all about fitness and teamwork,” he said.

“There’s a lot of running, but I enjoy it. The space on the field lets us be creative and make exciting plays.”

Looking ahead to the Olympics, Nawaqanitawase and his team are focused on improving and sticking to their game plan.

“It’s exciting, it’s about using our space wisely and making every moment count and make sure we stick to a plan.”

With roots tracing back to both Fijian and Italian heritage, his journey into the world of rugby began amidst the grassroots fields of Concord-Burwood Wolves and Leichhardt Wanderers.
