MARIST Champagnat Institute under-16 rugby team is aiming to secure a place in the national quarterfinals as they continue their campaign in the Fiji Secondary Schools Southern Zone Deans Trophy competition.

Head coach Aporosa Kaunisela said the team had invested significant time and effort into preparations leading up to the season and was determined to make its mark this year.

“The aim for this year is to make it to the national quarterfinals,” Kaunisela said.

Although Marist Champagnat was awarded a win in its opening fixture after a win by default, Kaunisela said the side had been preparing thoroughly for the competition.

“We started our off-season training and continued throughout the school holidays. We have been preparing well for this year,” he said.

The coach acknowledged there were challenges during the build-up, particularly in balancing the needs of students in the school’s inclusive environment.

Despite this, he praised the support received from the school administration and management team.

“The support from the school has been very good. Our head of school has been excellent and works closely with the managers and team officials to ensure everything runs smoothly.”

Attention has now shifted to Saturday’s clash against Christian Mission Fellowship College.

“CMF is a strong team. We will on our structures and make sure we do everything right so we can come away with a win.”

Kaunisela also highlighted the importance of coach development, revealing that his involvement with the school team has helped him progress through his rugby coaching qualifications.

For the players, however, the message remains simple.

“The message for the boys is the same as last year — come and enjoy yourselves during the game and throughout the competition.”

He also called on parents and supporters to turn up in numbers this week as the team looks to build momentum in its Southern Zone campaign.
