Mariah Carey cracked jokes about her diva reputation on the opening night of her world tour on Tuesday.
The Hero singer kicked off the European leg of her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour, her first trek to Europe for 13 years, in Glasgow, Scotland on Tuesday. And she played up to her longtime reputation for diva behaviour when her throat spray stopped working onstage.
“Now how is this thing supposed to work?” she tells the crowd, according to Scotland’s Daily Record. “It’s a spray thing for your throat but there’s no spray in it! Does anyone want it? I can’t use it! I’m not having a diva fit, don’t worry! It’s such a drama! Do you find this dramatic? It’s more traumatic for me!”
She played on her diva persona when a member of her crew did not put the stage fan on the correct setting. She told the operator, “Is it not difficult to turn a fan up — turn it up, don’t be stingy. When do you ever see me without a fan on?”
Throughout the show, Mariah treated her fans to her hits, including tour closing tracks Hero, We Belong Together and Without You, plus her duet with the late Whitney Houston, When You Believe and Always Be My Baby, which was accompanied by onscreen pictures of her twins Moroccan and Monroe, four.
She changed costumes on a number of occasions, stunning the crowd with a jewel-encrusted cut-out leotard and sparkly gowns. However, she did not manage to escape a wardrobe malfunction, and her tanned pantyhose ripped and created a large hole as she was dipped backwards by a male dancer.
