KOCOMA, Qamea, native Mareta Vukiwai Makulau is representing KuiViti at the Bula Festival 2026, using the platform to advocate for youth leadership in Fiji’s vital tourism sector.
Born and raised in Qeleni, Taveuni, the 21-year-old is pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing Science degree at the University of Fiji.
She is sponsored by KuiViti, a local contemporary fashion label, for the week-long festival which officially opened on Saturday.
Ms Makulau said she decided to join the Bula Festival to build her self-confidence, represent her community, and inspire other young women.
As a first-time contestant, she is hoping for a strong showing of community support at the festival events.
“I’m looking for them to come in numbers for the events, so they can come and support me since this is my first time being a contestant for the Bula Festival,” she said.
With her advocacy centred on empowering the younger generation to lead Fiji’s tourism industry, Ms Makulau is urging other young women to pursue their goals fearlessly.
“Just be yourself, step out of your comfort zone, never stop chasing your dreams.”
Ms Makulau will also be wearing special KuiViti pieces during the festival.
The festival was officially opened last Saturday at Prince Charles Park with a commemorative lighting of the Bula Festival torch.
Chief guest Fiji Airways chief strategy, transformation and risk officer Athil Narayan said the festival had a rich history of generosity, compassion and service.
“Through (Bula Festival’s) fundraising efforts, countless lives had been touched through support for health care, education, community development and those most in need,” he said.
