RECYCLED PET plastics cost a lot more than virgin PET plastics according to Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) general manager Roger Hare.

He said the company was willing to take on the extra cost as it was the right thing for the planet.

“If we were looking to save costs, definitely virgin PET, which obviously comes from oil even though with the oil price what it is, it’s still a lot cheaper, producing it with virgin than the recycled content,” said Mr Hare.

“However, the right thing for the planet is that we actually reuse this material.

“Despite the cost imposed and the extra costs involved with using recycled PET, we will be continuing to further and further use more recycled content rather than virgin.”

Mr Hare said given the economy shocks, what they were noticing from a shipping perspective, it was difficult getting products into Fiji as well as exporting out of the country to other Pacific Islands.

“So getting shipping is pretty tough. “I think the shipping lines here, their service in Fiji have done an incredible job to retain the capacity that we’ve got but yeah, that’s certainly one impact.

“And then of course, we are Coca-Cola European Pacific partners so in our group of companies we have a lot of our partner countries border on the Ukraine.

“So yes, it’s a bit worrying time for our colleagues in the northern hemisphere and our hearts go out to them but let’s hope it gets resolved quickly.”
