The High Court in Suva has convicted a man for raping his partner’s nine-year-old daughter at Wailoku in Suva last year.
The 35-year-old man was found guilty on a count of rape committed on August 30, 2024.
Court records show that when the victim’s mother left for work, the accused came into the room and proceeded to rape her while she was at home with her two brothers.
She wanted to run away, but the accused closed the door and, after committing the offence, told her to have breakfast.
The matter came to light when she was found crying in the bathroom by her brother.
“I feel sure that she told the truth in court,” stated Justice Siainiu Bull at the High Court in Suva on June 19.
“I reject as untrue the accused’s defence. He contradicted himself about why the complainant cried and gave implausible evidence on why his partner and the complainant were at the police station.
“He did not strike me as a truthful witness.”
