A mother and her three-month-old son escaped death when they were almost hit by an uncontrollable vehicle that untimately killed a man in his 30s at a bus stop along Latchman Chaudhary Feeder Rd in Sawani on Monday.

Moments before tragedy struck, Shelin Kumar was with her newborn son and aunt Madhu Mala waiting to board a bus to the Nausori Health Centre.

She said the only thing she could think about in those terrifying moments was the safety of her son.

“I held him as tight as I could when my aunt told me to run because the car was coming right at us,” she said.

Ms Mala, who first noticed the oncoming vehicle, said she struggled to sleep on Monday night as the moments before the collision continued to replay in her mind.

She said she remained traumatised by the incident and could not stop thinking about the state the victim was in.

“As a mother of four children, I only thought about who would look after them if something happened to me.”

Ms Mala said the victim was using his phone when she noticed the vehicle speeding towards the bus stop.

“I screamed for them to run, but when he wanted to jump it was too late.

“I thought the car was going to turn, but from the way it was coming, I knew something was wrong.”

She said she and her niece, Ms Kumar, ran from the tin bus shelter and sustained minor injuries in the process.

The man is believed to have been a Kiribati national.

According to police, the vehicle was driven by a 48-year-old man who remains admitted at the Nausori Health Centre.

Police confirmed the victim was rushed to the health centre where he later died from his injuries.
