Defending Skipper Cup champions Malolo opened their title defence with a hard-fought 24-23 victory over Taveuni at Lawaqa Park yesterday.
Taveuni made a strong start to the match, putting early pressure on the champions and racing to a 23-0 lead through two converted tries and three penalties.
No.8 Fabiano Rogovakalali crossed for the first try before Peni Tikoimalevani added another five-pointer. Josua Sokomuri converted both tries and also slotted three successful penalties to give Taveuni a commanding advantage.
Malolo responded in the 21st minute when winger Jiuta Biau crossed for their opening try, which was converted by Tevita Ledua.
Their forwards continued to build momentum, and a strong drive in the 25th minute allowed Maleli Bari to score their second try, with Ledua again adding the extras.
Taveuni went into the halftime break leading 23-14.
Malolo returned from the break with renewed intensity and narrowed the gap when Apisai Ledua scored their third try, converted by Tevita Ledua.
The champions were reduced to 14 players in the 47th minute after inside centre Esala Nalobo was sin-binned for foul play, but they continued to apply pressure.
A Taveuni infringement gave Tevita Ledua the opportunity to add another three points from the kicking tee, and his successful penalty proved crucial as Malolo held on for the narrow one-point victory.
Malolo coach Josefa Domolailai said communication was a key area for his side as they fought back to secure the win.
