As restrictions on movements continue with non-essential businesses remaining closed until further notice, there are people who are coming up with plans to take care of the welfare of their family members.

Shanil Chandra of Makoi, Nasinu, was in Suva city yesterday, trying to sell face masks made by his mother.

“I used to work for this private plumbing firm in Lami but when they closed the zones we could no longer go to work. Most of us were sent on leave without pay and this is why my family has been finding it hard to make ends meet,” he said.

He said his mother was a tailor and she had sewn the face masks which he brought to the city yesterday.

“I managed to sell about 10 masks at $2 each but people are not very welcoming and they do not want to buy it,” he said.

“There are six members in my house and I am the only one who had a job but now there is no one with a fixed employment,” he said.

Mr Chandra said he had been at home without any income for the past one month and was worried about how his family would be able to afford to buy groceries in case of a further lockdown.
