The LICI sponsored Lami Darts Association doubles tournament was a success, with brothers Romit Mahabir and Robyn Mahabir emerging as the champions of the competition held over the weekend.
The tournament saw a total of 32 teams, consisting of 64 players, compete over the course of two days.
National head coach of the Fiji Darts Association, Alan Veeran, expressed his satisfaction with the event, describing it as a great tournament that provided excellent competition.
He highlighted the significant number of games played, starting from the pool stages, which tested the players’ mental and physical strength, as well as their composure.
Looking ahead, Veeran mentioned that Lami is considering organising three more tournaments this year, in addition to the Suva team league starting in mid-July and the Tri-Nations tournament planned for October.
As the national coach, he encouraged more individuals to take up the sport, emphasising that darts provides a non-contact alternative for those who may not be able to participate in sports like soccer or rugby.
As national coach I would like to encourage more people to take up the sport. There are many people who cannot play soccer or rugby, and other contact sports why not give this a try,” said Veeran.
“We have about 14 teams in the country, and they are looking for people to train guide. Just show up or contact us and the rest is on us.”
Veeran expressed gratitude to LICI for their sponsorship of the event, as well as to the players, Fiji Darts Club, and Fiji Darts Association for their support.
He also called for increased corporate involvement through sponsorships to further develop the sport and work towards achieving the goal of becoming the South Pacific Darts champions at the competition held in the Cook Islands in 2027.
