Fighting domestic violence is a serious national issue that calls for unity where all facets of society, including Government and law enforcement, must work together, says Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya.
Her call follows a domestic violence incident that occurred last week.
“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to members of the public who alerted me to the incident of domestic violence faced by a young mother and her children last Saturday,” Ms Tabuya said.
“Your collective efforts in raising awareness and calling attention to this issue are commendable.”
She said the matter was reported to police and investigations were in progress.
“Additionally, I have involved the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, as well as the Ministry’s Women’s Interest officers and Child Welfare officers to assess the needs of the young mother and her children. I urge all women who are experiencing abuse or violence in their homes to come forward and seek help by contacting the ministry’s domestic violence toll-free line — 1560.”
Ms Tabuya is also calling on traditional leaders, community leaders, and leaders of faith-based organisations to join them in putting an end to this national scourge.
“Together, through a whole-ofsociety approach and a shift in behaviour, we can put an end to violence and abuse against women and children.
“Let us stand together to create a safer and more inclusive society for all.”
