Former Australian footballer Luke Wilkshire and his wife Kristina arrived in Fiji yesterday for the Extra Supermarket Fiji FA Awards Night this Sunday at Crowne Plaza in Nadi.
Reflecting on his return to Fiji after decades, Wilkshire expressed excitement about the visit.
“It feels great to be back. The last time I was here, I was just a little kid, around seven or eight years old. My wife is visiting for the first time, and we’re both looking forward to the coming days and the awards night,” he shared.
The former Australian international, who earned 80 caps for the Socceroos during his career, acknowledged the growth of football in Fiji and the wider Oceania region.
He highlighted the efforts of players like Leroy Jennings, whom he coached and is now part of Fiji’s national team.
“It’s great to see the passion for football here. Hopefully, in the coming years, younger generations will continue to be inspired to play and develop their skills,” he said.
Wilkshire also took the opportunity to encourage young Fijians to pursue their football dreams.
“Fall in love with the game and dream big. Football opens doors to endless possibilities. As a kid, I fell in love with the round ball, and it took me all over the world,” he shared.
Wilkshire expressed his gratitude for the invitation to be part of the event.
“I’m looking forward to the awards night and celebrating the sport with everyone here. It’s a privilege to see how football is growing in Fiji and to be part of this journey,” he added.
The Fiji FA Awards Night will honor outstanding players, officials, and teams for their contributions to Fijian football this year.
