VEHICLE operators that are not notified by their drivers of Traffic Infringement Notices will not be excused from paying any outstanding T.I.Ns by their company vehicles or drivers.

Land Transport Authority CEO Samuel Simpson made the comment as he noted the dangers of trucks being overloaded saying some people tend to overload their trucks in an attempt to save costs.

However, he said loading a truck beyond its capacity could have disastrous consequences.

For instance, Mr Simpson said overloaded buses would be less stable, difficult to steer and took longer to stop.

“Vehicles react differently when the maximum weights, which they are designed to carry are exceeded,” he said.

“Overloaded buses can cause the tyre to overheat and wear rapidly, which increases the chance of premature, dangerous and expensive failure or blow-outs.”

He said LTA had weight restriction in place of 32 tonnes of gross vehicle mass.

The CEO said there were penalties in place for those drivers and vehicle operators that may be tempted to engage in overloading.

Mr Simpson said they had a number of fixed weighbridge sites around the country, which were supplemented by mobile weighbridge equipment that were deployed in areas where overloading was known to occur.
