Former Lautoka City Council mayor Kenneth Low says the Sugar City is like an “open sewer” that has not been developed, cleaned or improved.
He told a public consultation on the proposed $5million three-storey development near Coronation Park that he was disappointed by the lack of focus on waste management and infrastructure upgrade of public amenities by the council.
“Lautoka was the Sugar City and the paradise of the Pacific but not today, today it is an open sewer,” Mr Low said.
“If you walk along Robertson Lane where I have two properties, unfortunately you will see it is an open sewer.
“If you go to the market and the public toilets, the council collects money from that, so the people living on the streets cannot afford to go there.
“So, they just ‘water’ my lane. I put on floodlights on the back of the building for the last two years, but they still use it as a toilet because there is no alternative.”
Mr Low said as a ratepayer he was also disappointed by the amount of rubbish found along the city’s main streets.
“There is rubbish everywhere.”
Mr Low said the city council should be looking after the welfare of ratepayers.
“You are there paid by the ratepayers and you are supposed to promote and look after the town,” he said.
