Fiji’s way back to economic recovery will be “long and difficult”, claim the leaders of three political parties who set the platform to fight the 2022 polls as a united front.
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry, Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube and Freedom Alliance Party leader Jagath Karunaratne claim the Fijian economy is “on its knees” and estimate to have declined by a cumulative 27 per cent over the past three years.
The trio claimd the FijiFirst Government had created “an unmanageable debt crisis” with “nearly half of our people living in poverty”.
“Natural resource sectors like sugar, other agricultural commodities, forestry, gold and fisheries have all been neglected. Our way back to economic recovery will, therefore, be long and difficult. Fiji needs capable and steady hands to steer us successfully through these challenging times.
“We, the leaders of the three political parties, are responding to the call by the people that it is time for a change. Fiji cannot allow the FijiFirst Government to continue to govern us, and in our view, they are not fit to lead.”
Meanwhile, questions sent to Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama regarding the views of the three political leaders remained unanswered.
