THE McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women captain Kolora Lomani has called on fans to pack Churchill Park as her side prepares for a blockbuster Super Rugby Women semi-final against the Queensland Reds today.
Lomani said the Drua were excited for the home knockout clash and stressed the importance of making a strong start.
“The message for us is that we have to start hard, especially in the first 20 minutes, and be connected as a team,” she said.
The skipper said preparations had gone smoothly, with the squad remaining calm and composed throughout the week despite several changes to the match-day side.
“The girls have been very composed and have just been doing what the coaches have asked of us. The new girls who have come in have really earned their spots, and we’re looking forward to what they can bring into the game.”
Lomani said confidence within the camp was high after the hard work the team had put in throughout the season.
“We’ve done all the hard work and we’ve earned the right to be here in the semi-final. We’re staying calm, staying in the moment and just looking forward to enjoying the occasion.”
While the Drua defeated the Reds 50-17 during the round-robin stage, Lomani expects a much tougher contest in the knockout fixture.
“We’re not taking the Reds lightly. We know they’re going to be a different team compared to what we played during the round robin. They’re going to bring a physical game, and we’re not going to sit back and let them walk over us.”
She said playing at home would provide extra motivation for the defending champions as they chase another Super Rugby Women grand final appearance.
“It’s a home game for us, so we’re expecting a very tough contest.”
Lomani also urged supporters to turn out in force and create the atmosphere Churchill Park has become known for.
“To all our fans, friends and families, we hope to see you out there today and give us your support.”
The winner of today’s semi-final will advance to the Super Rugby Women grand final against the winner from the second semi-final clash between Western Force and NSW Waratahs.
Today’s match kicks off at 1pm.
