THE review of the Litter Act is expected to be completed by April this year, with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change working to meet the timeline set by Government.
Permanent secretary for Environment Dr Sivendra Michael said the directive had come directly from the minister, with the review intended for the April parliamentary sitting.
“We have been asked by our minister that the review of the Litter Act should be completed by April, for the April sitting,” Dr Michael said.
“We are working with that timeline.”
Dr Michael said the review would also address gaps in the current legal framework, particularly around regulations.
He said the ministry was also aiming to have accompanying regulations implemented to strengthen enforcement.
“We hope the regulations will also be in place, the regulations do not need to go to Parliament.”
Dr Michael said once finalised, the regulations would move directly to Cabinet for approval.
“It will be endorsed at the Cabinet level.”
The review of the Litter Act is expected to support stronger enforcement measures and improve compliance as the Government addresses littering and illegal dumping across the country.
