Enforcement challenge

Yaqona ceremony
There are few traditional matters that should only be reserved for our iTaukei chiefs, but have now been used for political relevance, to accommodate whatever is necessary. Do we have to sacrifice our tradition for political gain? Foreign diplomats and local MPs, have been honoured with our chiefly traditional yaqona ceremony, which is not appropriate. What has the Ministry of iTaukei been doing all these years? It should only be presented when a iTaukei vanua chief, is being accorded for, accordingly. Today, it has been applied to every Tom, Dick and Harry, whenever, seen fit.
This has made a mockery of our iTaukei traditional and customary laws. Politics, tradition and religion, should run parallel. Somebody, influenced the introduction and attached the practice with politics at one time and is now a perpetual norm. Even a tiny bit of deceit is dishonourable, when it is used for selfish reasons. American President
I feel Kamala Harris will make a brilliant American President with her qualifications at age 59 compared with Donald Trump age 78. She will be the better option than Trump.

Pseudophedrine issue
In The Fiji Times dated 26/7, the founder of Drug Free World Fiji said that it was easy to obtain cold medicine which contained pseudophedrine over the counter at pharmacies in Fiji without a prescription. She even said that she could buy five from a chemist and five from another and then another five from another. This drug is a percursor to making meth. This is quite a huge concern.
Who do the pharmacies sell these products to? With respect to the good lady and kudos to her efforts, I still find that a bit difficult to believe as I have tried myself to get cold medicine from time to time that contained pseudophedrine but pharmacies strictly never sell them without a proper prescription. This type of cold medicine is much more effective for cold and flu attacks.
Maybe The Fiji Times should do a little investigation to determine the true state of this issue with pharmacies. And if she is correct, this practice of over the counter sales of cold meds with pseudophedrine should immediately stop. Conan Hatch, Nadi Airport
Shark alert
After watching Skarknado, by accident, I thought the world of shark fiction couldn’t get any weirder but the factual world has surpassed it. A story about sharks testing positive for cocaine would seem farcical except that it was published in National Geographic and a number of reputable newspapers. Basically the use of cocaine is so pervasive that it is damaging our environment when it gets into the water systems. If there was ever a point where we realised we need to protect the environment then the thought of a shark going through drug withdrawal must be it. It’s time to make a real effort to protect our world from human frailty and greed. Dennis Fitzgerald, Melbourne, Australia
