The American Corner “Let’s Talk STEM” discussion and hands-on activity was held at the Suva City Carnegie Library last week.

The event which supports women and girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) had the US Department of State’s Science Envoy, Dr Drew Harvell speak to female students.

Also present was the US regional public engagement specialist Alison McKee.

Dr Harvell is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the Cornell University in New York, US. She according to the US Embassy is a featured expert in national and international media and is widely published on the topics of marine biology.

The event as highlighted by the Embassy is one of a series of free activities at the American Corner Suva on STEM learning.

Dr Harvell according to the Embassy wanted to share her time and expertise to encourage young women to consider the STEM fields for further study and exciting careers.

Also during her visit to Fiji, Dr Harvell attended and spoke at SPC’S Pacific Islands Conference on Ocean Science and Ocean Management.
