Leptospirosis and typhoid continue to claim lives with two more succumbing to the disease.
The death brings the number of leptospirosis fatalities to 36, and typhoid to six – so far this year.
Fiji’s Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr James Fong said the most recent death involved a 15-year-old male who was presented to Nausori Health Centre on April 6 with leptospirosis and died on the same day.
“Sadly, there is one new death to report from typhoid fever in the Northern Division,” Dr Fong said.
“This death occurred in the week of March 28.
“There has been an upward trend in cases (typhoid) in the North since the last update, with four new cases in the last week from Bua, Cakaudrove, and Macuata. However, case numbers in the North remain below the outbreak threshold with 20 cases in total this year.”
The Ministry of Health has also said 591 people had been admitted this year for leptospirosis.
Dr Fong said there were 1784 lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis this year, with 67 new cases to report since April 20.
“Case numbers in the Western Division are declining but remain above the outbreak alert threshold, indicating more cases than the expected number for this time of the year for this endemic disease.”
The ministry also recorded 11 new COVID-19 cases with no deaths.
