MEMBERS of Fiji’s legal fraternity gathered at the Fiji Club in Suva on Friday to bid farewell to Court of Appeal president Justice William Calanchini.

Speaking during the farewell, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Christopher Pryde thanked Justice Calanchini for his contribution to Fiji’s judiciary.

“For as long as I have worked in Fiji, His Lordship the Honourable Mr Justice William Calanchini has been there; a tower of strength in the judiciary when confidence in that limb of government was at an all-time low; a steadfast and stable presence in the face of unyielding, unprecedented and ill-conceived sanctions on the judiciary and its members, who together with other stalwarts in the judiciary such as our former Chief Justice Anthony Gates, kept the courts and the judicial system open so that Fijians would not be deprived of their rights under the law,” Mr Pryde said.

Justice Calanchini, who is from Australia, joined the Fiji judiciary in 2009.
