A leaked document said to be part of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner alleges that the dissolution of marriage of a Member of Parliament may have been a “sham, to avoid financial disclosures”.

According to the alleged report, the MP had previously been investigated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for failing to declare her husband’s shares in a company.

The document states that FICAC initially found the couple had divorced in 2016, meaning the MP was not legally required to disclose the shares when she contested the 2022 General Election. Based on that, the report notes that a recommendation was made to close the file.

However, the leaked pages suggest new information later emerged indicating the pair had remained in an “intimate relationship”, and the divorce “may have been a sham to avoid financial disclosures”.

The matter is described in the document as “highly relevant to FICAC”, particularly because the MP’s alleged ex-husband is a co-owner of a construction company that has reportedly received “millions of dollars” in government contracts.

The document also raises concerns over whether the company fully disclosed the nature of the relationship during government tender processes – which, it claims, could potentially breach procurement transparency requirements.

There has been no official confirmation of the leaked report’s authenticity, and no public comment from the individuals named.
