LAWYER Sainiana Radrodro has called on government leaders to set the benchmark in terms of how people are supposed to behave as a community.

Speaking at the public consultation in Lautoka yesterday on the proposed Criminal Records Bill, Ms Radrodro said serious offences also included those in power.

“I know this is also a sensitive issue and I would like to suggest that once we are looking at serious offences, we must be able to start at the top,” she said.

“Serious offences must also mean people like yourselves — our leaders.

“The rest of us look up to you to set the benchmark, in terms of how we are supposed to behave as a community.

“Once we are led by principled people at the top, we can expect the rest to flow accordingly and offences carried out by politicians, for example during your term or outside of your term, must be seen as a serious offence.”

Ms Radrodro said she was making the submission with a lot of love, knowing that she also belonged to a political family.

“And I will not drawback if it meant my own family was involved in anything that was undoable and questions the issues of integrity and ethics.

“I know that you have a code of ethics and code of governance, it would give us all the people comfort to see that you place yourselves high amongst serious offences if anything people should look at.”
