The Lautoka Hospital has successfully completed open-heart surgeries on two Fijians in their 50s.

In a press conference today, Aspen Medical chief executive Annette Owttrim indicated this successful complicated medical procedure is a historic milestone for the people of Fiji and the Lautoka Hospital.

The procedure was carried out by a team of 20 specialists from Chennai, India.

“As we speak, another patient has just come out of surgery and is now in our dedicated Cardiothoracic Intensive Care.

“I understand that there may be some questions regarding the patient waiting list.

“Suffice to say clinical tests are being carried out and the patients will be selected for the surgery and are being contacted according to a priority list, which has been developed from a clinical perspective.”
