Suva lawyer Abdul Sharzan Lateef has been given back his legal practicing certificate.
The High Court in Suva heard this yesterday when Mr Lateef’s appeal against the decision of the Chief Registrar to cancel his practicing certificate was called before Chief Justice Kamal Kumar.
Mr Lateef was allowed to sit at the bar table after nearly three years, and asked the court if it could be clarified whether he was given a new practicing certificate or his old one was renewed.
The C-J clarified that lawyers do not get new or renewed practicing certificates.
“You are issued a practicing certificate every year to practice law,” he said.
“Even though you did not have a practicing certificate, you were still a legal practitioner.”
Mr Lateef sought time from the court to consider whether to withdraw his appeal of the Chief Registrars 2019 decision to cancel his practicing certificate.
The matter will be called again November 8.
