It was an unforgettable moment for former Suva team midfielder Shailendra Lal when they clinched victories in both the Fiji FACT and BOG tournaments in 1995.

Lal, now 53 years old, reminisces about the surreal experience of playing in the tournament for the first time and achieving the ultimate success of becoming champions, which he describes as one of the best moments of his life.

“Winning Fiji FACT and BOG in the same year. That was 1995. Then what we did was, we won the National League back-to-back,” said Lal.

“The 1995-1996 season and the 1996-1997 season. So, from 1995 right up to 1998, Suva was a very consistent team.”

Reflecting on the evolution of football since his playing days, Lal acknowledges the notable changes that have taken place.

He notes that the game has become quicker and more fast-paced, with an increased emphasis on setting up plays and blending individual brilliance with cohesive teamwork.

In the past, Lal recalls a more balanced playing field among districts, where any team could potentially emerge victorious.

However, he observes that in the present landscape, there are clear favorites and stronger teams who are likely to progress to the semi-finals.

“I guess football has changed from our time. It has become a bit quicker, I suppose. And a bit more fast-paced than when we were playing.

“More of setting up plays. And it was more individual brilliance bringing it together with the rest of the players to form a team.

The memories of their achievements during those years still hold a special place in Lal’s heart, highlighting the team’s remarkable success during that period.

When asked about his thoughts on this year’s Fiji FACT, Lal’s loyalty to Suva shines through as he expresses his desire for the team to excel.

While acknowledging the strength of teams like Rewa, Lal leans towards supporting his beloved Suva team and hopes to see them advance to the finals and emerge victorious in the tournament.

Lal’s resides in Australia, and he is currently in the country to play for the Suva veterans’ team for the 2025 RC Manubhai/APCO Coatings International Veterans Tournament.
