Lalauvaki murder trial: Tikoenaburevere acquitted; Kolinisau convicted of manslaughter

SUVA High Court judge Justice Vinsent Perera has acquitted a former Police officer charged with murder however, he convicted another accused, also a former Police officer for the charge of manslaughter.

Kelepi Kolinisau and Selema Tikoenaburevere were jointly charged with one count of murder.

Kolinisau and Selema were alleged to have murdered Joseua Lalauvaki following an altercation outside a Suva nightclub last year.

Lalauvaki died at the CWM hospital on October 11, 2018 from injuries allegedly sustained as a result of police assaults.

For the first accused Kolinisau, the assessors gave an opinion of not guilty however they gave an opinion of guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Justice Perera concurred with the opinion of the assessors.

For the second accused Tikoenaburevere, the assessors gave an opinion of not guilty however they gave a guilty opinion to a lesser charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Justice Perera however said he did not find sufficient evidence for the lesser charge and acquitted the second accused.

Kolinisau has been remanded and will be sentenced on November 20.
