Fijians of Indian descent in Labasa were the target of the coups, according to prominent personality Surendra Lal.

Mr Lal told the Truth and Reconciliation steering committee’s consultations in Labasa they were subjected to threats and ill-treatment, and as a result had developed trust issues with the disciplined forces.

“The canefarmers were the main targets in 1987,” he said.

“They were picked from town and made to walk barefoot to the camp.”

Mr Lal said they deserved an apology for their treatment at the hands of the forces.

“We haven’t heard them saying they will reconcile with those people impacted by the coups.

“We have lost faith.”

In response, steering committee chairperson Sashi Kiran said the commission would be set up not only to hear the grievances of one race or ethnicity but the country as a whole.

“All ethnicities will be able to come to the commission and have their voices heard,” Ms Kiran said.

“The commission will have all sets of issues.”

Ms Kiran added the process was about national reconciliation and not about individuals.
