The Lakeba Rubies women’s Rubies cricket team created history over the weekend after winning its first game in its maiden tournament beating Nadi during their Cricket Fiji T20 clash at Albert Park in Suva.
“The win is a motivation to our young women to go harder,” Lakeba Cricket Association secretary Sevuloni Baba said.
“Every win our women will get is memorable being this is the first women’s cricket team from Lakeba.”
The Rubies batted first for 81 runs with Nadi in return chasing the score and only managing a score of 56 runs all out.
“Most of these girls who are playing for our LCA women’s team are studying at the University of the South Pacific.
“For some of the players, it is their first time to hold a cricket bat or cricket ball or even play cricket.
“We thank our coaching director Tavo Sorovakatini for developing these girls to play cricket. They are learning fast and are blending in well.”
Baba said the association had been calling more women cricket enthusiasts to join the team.
“We urge young women of Lakeba to come and join our Lakeba women’s cricket team.”
