The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is concerned with the lack of taxi services in semi-urban and rural areas.
LTA chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said a majority of the taxis were operating from towns and cities neglecting the needs of the people from where the taxis were initially issued.
“We expect that a majority of these issues will be resolved with the reversion from the OTRS to the Taxi Base and Stand System and subsequent operational support from licensed taxis,” Mr Rokosawa said.
He said “pari” were operating because of the demand from the public where taxis were not available.
“The mere existence of a ‘pari system’ indicates that the current supply of taxis is not able to cater to the demands of the travelling public’.
“Once this demand is satisfied, the primary basis of illegal operations would be removed.”
