Labasa man killed in early morning stabbing

THE man who died following an alleged stabbing incident in Labasa has been identified as Prem Chand.

Police confirmed a suspect is in custody following the incident, which occurred at about 2am yesterday along Rara Avenue in Labasa Town. Officers discovered the victim, believed to be in his late 50s, lying in a pool of blood at approximately 2.30am.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said officers responded to the report and apprehended a suspect.

“The suspect is in custody,” Ms Naisoro said.

The victim, who was a part-time music teacher at a cultural centre, was allegedly stabbed more than three times with a knife. He was rushed to Labasa Hospital where he later died from injuries believed to have been sustained during the attack.

In a statement, family member Ishwar Prasad said Mr Chand, of Korowiri, Labasa, was the youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs Shiu Prasad of Korokadi, Bua.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Mr Prem Chand, director of Northern Premier Music Center and a music teacher at the multicultural centre,” he said.

“He departed from this world this morning, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.”

Mr Prasad said Mr Chand is survived by his wife, Lila Wati, and their only son.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Police investigations continue.
