The Labasa women’s team stays in contention of qualifying to the semi-finals of the OFC Women’s Champions League after securing its first pool win yesterday.
Labasa defeated Tonga’s representative Veitongo FC 2-0, eliminating them from the competition. Labasa drew 1-1 with Auckland United in their opening match on Tuesday.
They sit in second place in Group B with four points, levelled with Auckland United which sits on top with a dominant goal difference.
Defending champions AS Academy Feminine lost to Auckland 0-5 and has three points on the table but, they still have a chance to go through to the last four if they beat Labasa in their last pool match on Sunday.
Anasimeci Volitikoro was named the player of the match against Veitongo and although she did not get her name on the scoresheet, her work rate was impressive.
Shayal Sindhika also played well, playing a role in both their goals, setting up Narieta Leba who finished off for a 1-nil lead in the 25th minute.
Leba hit the target again in the 39th minute thanks to some timely and accurate execution by Sindhika and Unaisi Tuberi.
