TEAM Fiji debutant Charis Kwong is stepping onto one of the biggest stages in regional swimming with quiet confidence and a strong sense of family behind her.

Originally from Bucalevu in Ra and shared maternal links to Rotuma, the 19-year-old carries with her a rich blend of heritage and a story shaped by perseverance, discipline, and support.

Her journey in the pool began at the age of seven, but like many young swimmers, it wasn’t a straight path.

After taking a two-year break, she returned with renewed purpose as a member of the Dolphin Swimming Club, eventually finding not just commitment, but a genuine love for the sport.

That passion has now taken her to her first Oceania Swimming Championship which is a milestone made even more special as all the Kwong siblings have qualified to represent Fiji.

“It’s something we’re really proud of,” she said.

“We’re thankful to our parents. We wouldn’t be here without their support.”

Preparation hasn’t been without its challenges. Kwong admits there have been “ups and downs” along the way, but nothing that has shaken her focus.

Competing in various grand prix meets leading up to the open nationals helped sharpen her race readiness and ultimately secure her place on Team Fiji.

Now, her goals are simple but meaningful which is to improve on her personal bests and embrace the experience of competing against some of the region’s top swimmers.

“I’m excited to race and also watch the others compete and I’m ready to represent Fiji.”

Motivated by her parents’ work ethic, Kwong is determined to make the most of every opportunity in the pool.

Her message to aspiring swimmers and supporters is just as grounded as her journey.

“If you want to do something, just go for it and don’t give up.”

For Kwong, Oceania is more than just a competition as it is a celebration of how far she has come, and a glimpse of where she’s heading next.
