THE Vodafone Fiji Bati’s hope of a chance for a Pacific Championships promotion-relegation match next weekend was dashed after Papua New Guinea defeated Cook Islands yesterday.

NRL reported the Cook Islands “made the most of multiple attacking opportunities to score 14-straight points and give Fiji hope they could leapfrog into first place in the Bowl standings”.

The host side was trailing 14-4 midway through the first half and was in danger of falling below Fiji in the Bowl standings.

Skipper Lachlan Lam and fullback Nene Macdonald propelled the Kumuls comeback attack to help the side win 42-20.

The win sees the Kumuls take a shot at promotion into the Pacific Cup against New Zealand next week.

Tonga, after its 25-24 win over New Zealand will face Australia in the final.
