OPPOSITION Member of Parliament Parveen Kumar has called on the Government to direct Fiji Sugar Corporation to immediately formulate an agreement that was reached by the Rakiraki Town Council and the miller some years back, regarding the FSC ground.
While contributing to the debate on the Rakiraki Town Council’s Annual Report for the year 2019, Mr Kumar said the FSC ground, which included the golf course, was granted to the council some years back. He said the Coalition Government had failed to formalise the agreement.
“This delay is unacceptable to Rakiraki Town Council and the people of Rakiraki,” Mr Kumar said.
“I ask the Government to direct the FSC to immediately formulate the agreement that was reached by the Rakiraki Town Council and the FSC some years back. Apart from the Sports Council’s facilities in Rakiraki, there is no other ground. That’s the only one.”
He said the Bainimarama regime was successful in their negotiation with FSC at that time, and they gave the ground and golf course to the council. In response, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa said they were in consultation with the Ministry of Sugar on the issue.
“I think there was, as alluded earlier by Mr Bala (Mr Kumar), something that we are also talking about and also liaising on and also having a consultation with the Ministry of Sugar on the possibility of the council to lease FSC sports ground,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“One of the plans by the council, if given the lease by the FSC, is to upgrade the place to be a good sports ground to be used by the people in Rakiraki as well as the rest of the people of Ra.”
