MINISTER for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran is calling on Fijians to report any form of elderly abuse.

In an address marking World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day in Rakiraki on Wednesday, Ms Kiran said the elderly deserved to be protected and to live a peaceful and rewarding life.

“The elderly are often physically weaker and more vulnerable,” said Ms Kiran.

“A small injury can have permanent consequences.

“The loss of even a little money can mean a missed meal or medicine.

“Many are isolated, lonely, or battling illness — making them targets for exploitation or violence. Some have even lost their lives to violent robberies.”

She said there were a number of services that Fijians could access to report elderly abuse.

“If you know of, witness or are concerned about a possible case of elder abuse, here are some steps you can document what you see or hear — keep records of the incidents, report it to the police or consult a lawyer, reach out to the Department of Social Welfare and support community networks that provide care and protection for the elderly.

“I urge anyone with questions or seeking help to contact the Legal Aid Commission, which provides free legal advice and services across the country.

“Or you are most welcome to call the Empower Pacific toll-free line on 5626 or the domestic violence helpline 1560 to seek assistance and advice.”

Meanwhile, Wairuku advisor Urmila Prasad reflected on the importance of World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day.

“This is an important day because many of our elders are being neglected and we need to remind people that the elderly are an important part of our community,” said Mrs Prasad.

“We should be looking after them and if there is any abuse happening near you, then you should do the right thing and report it.”
