MINISTER for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has condemned a video posted by students of a local tertiary institution that appears to mock sign language and the deaf community.
Ms Kiran said sign language was an essential form of communication and an important part of the deaf community’s language, culture and identity.
“Sign language is not a joke, a costume or a prop for entertainment,” she said.
“Making fun of it is disrespectful and reinforces the harmful attitudes and stereotypes that people with disabilities continue to face.”
Ms Kiran said every person, regardless of ability, had the right to dignity, equality and respect.
She said such incidents undermined efforts to remove barriers and build a more inclusive Fiji.
“True inclusion requires more than policies and programs.
“It requires each of us to examine our attitudes, challenge discrimination and ensure that people with disabilities feel respected, represented and valued in every part of society.”
She urged the students and institution to reflect on the harm caused and use the incident as an opportunity for education and accountability.
Ms Kiran also called on educational institutions to strengthen disability awareness and promote respect for diversity.
She said social media could either reinforce prejudice or help build a more inclusive society.
“Disability is not inability. Inclusion is everyone’s responsibility.”
