Fiji’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Nazhat Shameem Khan, has been elected as a deputy prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, a position she will take up in March next year.

Her selection was formalised at the 20th session of the Assembly of States Parties in The Hague, Netherlands, last Friday. Of the 90 countries voting, Mrs Khan received 62 votes in the first round of voting.

“I am honoured to be elected a deputy prosecutor of the International Criminal Court,” she posted on her Twitter handle.

“One chapter at the @UN_HRC presidency closes at the end of the year, and another will open in March next year.

“Many thanks to those who walked the path of diplomacy with me in the last 7 years.”

Mrs Khan was among 177 candidates who applied for the position and was later shortlisted as one of five who were vying for the position.

The position carries a salary of $415,000 and she will be based at the ICC headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands.
