TEAMWORK will be the focus for the Fiji Airways men’s 7s side at the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles from May 4-5.
Head coach Osea Kolinisau said on Tuesday that he is not looking for individual stars to carry the team.
Instead, every player must perform and contribute equally.
“We don’t strive for a game-changer. Our only X-factor is the team,” Kolinisau said.
He told players that there will be no room for casualness or overconfidence in the squad.
“You can’t hide in sevens. There’s a lot of space. If you’re unfit, it will show. So, we want everyone to carry their load,” he said.
The former Fiji 7s captain and Olympic gold medallist used the example of Germany beating Brazil in the FIFA World Cup semifinal to show the power of teamwork over individual brilliance.
“Brazil had talent, but Germany played as a team. That’s how they won. We want the same for our team,” he said.
He said every player in the squad must be ready to step up, even in unfamiliar roles and training is designed with that in mind.
“We train for what might happen. I play guys in different positions, so if something happens, we are ready,” he said.
Kolinisau also praised young forward Sakiusa Siqila for showing maturity and leadership in recent training sessions.
“There was a lot of pressure, but he stood up tall. He showed he can control and direct the game,” he said.
With squad selection due today, the focus is on unity, discipline and hard work.
