The Fiji Law Reform Commission (FLRC) is inviting public submissions as it begins a comprehensive review of several key agricultural laws, including the Agricultural Produce Market Act 1970, Brands Act 1928, Pound Act 1877, Trespass of Animals Act 1955, Goat (Ear Marks) Act 1955, and the Protection of Animals Act 1954 and 1935.
In a circular issued on May 2, 2026, the Commission said the review is being conducted under its current Terms of Reference and aims to modernise legislation governing Fiji’s agricultural sector.
The review will run until September 30, 2026.
The Commission said the process will involve consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, industry groups, and relevant government agencies.
“The review will consider amendments that align with current government policies, regional and international best practices, and the future needs of Fiji’s agricultural sector,” the statement said.
The review is being supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, and the Office of the Solicitor-General.
The FLRC noted the review forms part of a broader Cabinet-approved initiative to update 26 agricultural laws.
Key focus areas include strengthening sustainable agricultural development, improving food and nutrition security, assisting poverty alleviation efforts, increasing rural resilience, and enhancing productivity and standards.
The Commission also plans to conduct targeted workshops and consultations to gather feedback, with details to be published on its website and social media platforms.
Members of the public can submit their views online, via email, or by post once the submission process officially opens.
The FLRC has encouraged all stakeholders to participate in the review process to help shape a modern and effective legal framework for Fiji’s agriculture sector.
