Karan wins gold

FIJI’S long distance runner Yeshil Karan secured a gold medal after coming in first place in the Pacific Games 10,000 metres men’s final at the National Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands yesterday.

Karan finished the race in a time of 32 minutes 32.30 seconds after lapping all the runners to win gold.

In second place was Kent Hugh of Guam who clocked 33.48.60 while Bob Dilu Goiye of Papua New Guinea came in third with a time of 33.57.08

Fiji’s veteran runner Avikash Lal finished in seventh place, clocking a time of 35 minutes.

The 22-year-old Karan arrived in Honiara with the second batch of Team Fiji athletes over the weekend.

The former Tavua College student is yet to compete in four more events.

He will compete in the 5000m event, 1500m, 3000m steple chase and the half marathon.

Meanwhile, Fiji’s other gold medal came from Va’a after Elenoa Vateitei won the V1 500m final.

Va’a also won a bronze medal in the V12 final.

As of 8pm yesterday, Fiji had 12 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals to be placed fifth on the medal standings.

New Caledonia continues to lead followed by Australia and Tahiti.
