Kane rues costly miss as England held by Ghana at nil-all

Harry Kane admitted he should have scored after missing a golden late opportunity as England were held to a goalless draw by in their FIFA World Cup clash today  

The England captain squandered a gilt-edged chance in the closing stages that would have secured victory and booked England’s place in the Round of 32.

With England pushing for a winner, headed a cross onto the crossbar before the rebound fell perfectly for Kane six yards from goal. However, the prolific striker sent his effort over the bar, leaving England fans stunned.

Kane, who scored twice in England’s opening 4-2 win over Croatia, said missed chances are part of life as a striker.

“You go through games like that,” Kane said. “I was just waiting for an opportunity like that to fall my way. It did, but I couldn’t quite get over the ball. I’m backing myself to score that more often than not.”

Had he converted, Kane would have surpassed ‘s England World Cup record of 10 goals.

England coach described the miss as a major chance, saying a winning goal would have been deserved based on England’s performance.

The draw means England must wait to confirm their progression to the knockout stages when they face in on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Kane remains on 81 goals in 116 appearances for England and continues his pursuit of the tournament’s Golden Boot.
