Kamil Muslim College in Ba has scooped the New Zealand High Commission Essay Competition for the second time.
With a total of 615 entries from 106 secondary schools in Fiji, Kamil Muslim College managed to win the competition.
The essay competition according to the New Zealand Deputy High Commissioner, Alex Shahryar -Davies presents an opportunity for students to explore their creativity skills, foster research and develop knowledge.
Winning the competition was Year 11 student, Manoa Doughty – known as the supreme winner at national level, he received a $500 cash prize, a laptop, a trophy and a certificate. He also received story books and a plaque from the school last week.
College principal, Mrs Shabinah Ali expressed her happiness about the achievement.
“Being the supreme winner in this year’s New Zealand High Commission’s Essay competition has brought us glory not only at national level but also at International level,” she said.
She encouraged other students to write and to make use of the given platforms like the NZ High Commission Essay Competition.
“Unless one takes part in this type of competition, their true worth is unidentified,” she said.
“Being the overall winner is a significant accomplishment.”
She emphasised the school’s commitment to holistic development, stating that competitions like that motivates students to recognise their strengths and strive for excellence in their education.
Competition judge Dr Satendra Singh also inspired the students to continue reading and to write as these skills will help them in the future. The school also did well in the National Global Handwashing video competition this year.
Year 12 students, Amyra Azeeza Khan, Waisale Navula Buli and Suluweti Raibe Laga won the video competition.
They received a $600 cash prize while the school received a plaque, a certificate, hand washing kits, hygiene kits and seven emergency water buckets.
