FORMER Telecom Fiji Ltd and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings board member Sanjay Kaba has denied a charge of obtaining a financial advantage of more than $700,000.

Mr Kaba appeared before Suva Magistrate Krishan Prasad yesterday.

He is alleged to have engaged in bidding for a tender through his company, Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Ltd (HLK Jacob), to provide project management services for TFL’s new office and data centre project.

As a result, he allegedly obtained $766,327.22 between June 2022 and July 2023. It is further alleged he knew HLK Jacob Ltd was not eligible to receive this financial advantage as he had failed to declare his interest as a director of the company.

Yesterday the court granted Mr Kaba a variation to his bail conditions to allow him to travel out of the country from March 1 to 18.

FICAC prosecutor Lilian Mausio did not object but sought certain conditions be met.

When the matter was recalled at 2.30pm, the magistrate informed the court that $75,000 had been placed in the judiciary’s trust account — a requirement from Ms Mausio for each of the two sureties to pay $25,000 as bond and Mr Kapa to pay $25,000.

The court has temporarily removed the stop departure order and released Mr Kaba’s passport.

The case has been adjourned to March 19 when Mr Kaba is required to return his passport to the court registry.
